Asphalt Composition Shingle Roofing | Common Roofing Materials Comparison Pt. 1

Asphalt Roof Composition shingles are the most common roofing material in North America. They are commonly made of either fiberglass or recycled paper based products mixed with asphalt, which is then covered with colored mineral granules. While they have a low installation cost, composition shingles will usually protect your home for about 10-15 years. Some composition roofs require maintenance or repair in as little as 8 years.

This material can be easily damaged by high winds, causing the shingles to blow off. High heat, heavy rains and other weather factors can cause curling, cracking and streaking of the shingles, which deteriorates your roof’s appearance and effectiveness. An average home with composition shingles will have to be re-roofed many times over its lifetime, creating waste that will need to be disposed of in the environment.

  1. The first thing that jumps to mind when people hear about asphalt is roads. But the versatility of asphalt makes it the ideal material for other applications and locations, from driveways to runways, from the barn floor to the ocean floor.
The major types of asphalt used in construction are rolled asphalt and mastic asphalt.
Rolled asphalt is the variety with which most people are probably familiar, as it makes up about 80% of asphalt used in the United States. Rolled asphalt is made of aggregate, or solid materials such as sand, gravel, or recycled concrete, with an asphalt binder. Rolled asphalt is used to make roads and other surfaces, such as parking lots, by being applied in layers and compacted. Different types of rolled asphalt are distinguished according to the process used to bind the aggregate with the asphalt.
Mastic asphalt, also called sheet asphalt has a lower bitumen content than the rolled asphalt forms. It is used for some roads and footpaths, but also in roofing and flooring. Stone mastic asphalt (SMA), another variety, is becoming increasingly popular as an alternative to rolled asphalt. Its benefits include an anti-skid property and the absence of air pockets, but if laid improperly, it may cause slippery road conditions.
